The work
A die casting machine of this size does not arrive as a machine. It arrives in pieces — 369 tonnes of them — and the heavy sections, up to sixty-nine tonnes each, have to cross a working plant floor to reach the bed.
Lifting was done by a 160-tonne mobile crane, but only outside and only where a crane was the right tool. Once a section was through the door it travelled on 32-tonne skates and a 37-tonne forklift, low to the ground — inside a plant that is still running, nothing is carried high. The building gave us a five-metre door and no more, so every package was measured against it before it moved. The bed was welded in place first, then the sections were set onto it one at a time.
The campaign ran three days, inside the six-day window planned for it, with the plant in production the whole time. The machine was accepted by the client on the day it was finished.
One crane, one crew, and a floor that never stopped working.
